Welcome to Mount Washington
Serenity and seclusion are just two of the many highlights of this highly desirable neighborhood.
A verdant and sun-splashed park-like setting makes up Los Angeles’ coveted East Side community, Mount Washington. Established in 1909, it’s home to the Mount Washington Hotel—once a tremendous draw for California socialites—and the Southwest Museum, where artifacts provide a glimpse into The Golden State’s enthralling history. Resting beneath the gorgeous San Gabriel Mountains, Mount Washington sustains a peaceful, slightly-suburban feel—but with profound style.
Situated between downtown Los Angeles and Pasadena, Mount Washington offers a rare relationship with nature. Here, you will find canyons and valleys, parks and trails—and splendid, expansive views of the Pacific Ocean. Having played a vital role in California’s Arts and Crafts Movement, the steep-hilled enclave has maintained its bohemian feel but with a polished, modern twist. Now, marvelously-restored Craftsman and Victorian homes look out upon greater Los Angeles from their romantic, cliffside perches.

Characteristic of several Northeastern Los Angeles neighborhoods, Mount Washington locals enjoy a mix of posh and casual eateries—both in their district and in the alluring burgs in their vicinity.
American classics and Latin plates are served with care—and an inspired touch—at Gloria’s Cuisine LA. The ultra-popular brunch spot provides patrons with options ranging from churro waffles crowned with salted caramel and whipped cream to mole enchiladas with queso fresco—scrumptious meals that frequently attract repeat customers. La Abeja, a local favorite for traditional Mexican fare, serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner in a casual setting.

Things to Do
Mount Washington’s reputation as one of Los Angeles’ most historic enclaves is evidenced by its Southwest Museum. Suspended above the sprawling city, the Mission Revival-designed museum—one of the first museums in Los Angeles—offers a compendium of information, artifacts, tools, pottery, and basketry crafted by American Indians.
Mount Washington is also home to the Self-Realization Fellowship. Founded in 1920 by one of the most prominent yogis in the West, Paramahansa Yogananda, the beautiful headquarters—complete with lush grounds and towering trees—provides Kriya Yoga teachings and meditation gardens.
Given Mount Washington’s abundance of green spaces, hikers will be delighted with the community’s host of excellent trails. Moon Canyon Park ranks high on the list. More of a neighborhood hike than a challenging trek, it nonetheless showcases staggering city views, access to the Self-Realization Fellowship center, and a healthy dose of tranquility.
